The only 7-star hotel in the world, this establishment is considered the most luxurious hotel in the world by hotel experts.
The Burj al Arab (which can be translated as the Tower of Arabia) is a luxury hotel located on a man-made island 300 m from Jumeirah beach in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At 321 meters high, it is the third-highest hotel in the world, and it is also one of the most expensive. Construction of the Burj al Arab began in 1994, and the hotel opened to visitors on 1 December 1999.
The Burj Al Arab was once the largest hotel in the world. It has now been surpassed by the 3 other buildings also built in Dubai, namely the Rose Tower, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, and the Burj Jumeirah. Although officially the Burj Al Arab has only 5 stars, as this is the highest rating by international standards, hotel critics give it a special 7-star rating. The Burj Al Arab is also distinguished by the fact that it is the only hotel in the world to be built on an artificial island.
A HOTEL ENTIRELY MADE OF LUXURY AND PRESTIGE
The shape of the building is inspired by the sail of a boat. Its location and orientation is very special since it is located in a specific area so that the shadow of the building does not cover the beach. On the roof of the hotel, there is a heliport, which is also used as a tennis court. Professional tennis players Andre Agassi and Roger Federer were involved in the filming of the hotel’s advertising spots and the tennis court, among other things.
This hotel is managed by the Jumeirah Group. Despite its size, the Burj Al Arab has only 202 en-suite rooms, including 142 one-bedroom luxury suites, 28 two-bedroom luxury suites, 18 panoramic suites, 4 Club Suites, 6 Diplomatic Suites, 2 Presidential Suites, and 2 Royal Suites. The smallest suite occupies an area of 169 square meters, while the largest is 780 square meters.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BURJ AL ARAB: A ROYAL ADVENTURE
The construction of the Burj Al Arab was under the direction of architect Tom Wright of the multidisciplinary consulting firm Atkins. The actual construction of the building was carried out by the South African construction company Murray & Roberts. The building is distinguished by a number of technical feats and complex constructions. The artificial island erected especially for the establishment had to be built low enough to give the impression that the building was floating on the water.
Recovering the land from the sea took 3 years, and the engineers had to create a layer of soil with large rocks. About 70,000 cubic meters of concrete and more than 9,000 tonnes of steel imported from the United States were used in the construction of the tower. The construction of the hotel involved an international team of more than 3,000 contractors, 250 designers, and 3,500 workers for just over 5 years.
